The Space Between

Hello, Reader.

Week after week I pop into your Inbox with information about places we've been or places we're planning to go. I share ideas for how to plan your next trip, things to do, and general inspiration in the hopes that you take the next step to experiencing somewhere amazing for yourself.

But what about the in-between times? This is one of those weeks…

I've got 6 of the next 7 nights on the work schedule (close enough to feel all-consuming), followed by six nights off. Yep! I've got a six-night weekend just around the corner. How amazing does that sound?

But here's the catch… What should I do with almost a week off?

The plan was to head up to Chicago to meet up with family coming in from the West Coast. Maybe go to a White Sox game (that would add another MLB stadium to our tour!).

But as they do, plans changed.

Similarly, friends keep asking, "Where is your next big trip to?"

Great question!

Months ago, we started planning a European vacation for the fall to celebrate a milestone birthday (that's a great inspiration, don't you think?). We booked the hotels, got our time off work approved, then… Paused.

Sometimes life happens and this was one of those times.

Now here we are, two-and-a-half months from our planned departure, without all the details in place. Airfare costs have gone up, do we or don't we need to apply for the new ETIAS entry visa, is now really a good time to go? So many questions to answer and details to complete.

Have you ever found yourself in this same space of in-between? You want to go somewhere. You have inspired ideas. But you're not quite sure how to get there.

Believe me, it's a more common feeling than you might believe.

Even those of us who LOVE traveling to new places, then sharing the experiences with others, sometimes find the process hard.

But here's the best part. It might be hard, but it's not impossible.

Here's what I know for sure: not every trip needs its details buttoned up months in advance. Sometimes the in-between IS the plan, at least for now. We'll figure out Chicago, or something else entirely, for those six nights off. And we'll get the European trip sorted, one decision at a time.

Speaking of which, ETIAS is one of those moving targets even I haven't nailed down yet. The launch date keeps shifting, and I want to give you the real answer instead of a guess. So I'm going to do some digging and bring you what I find in an upcoming email, whether that's good news for our trip or one more thing to plan around.

Until then, we'll keep you posted on where we land. Chicago, Europe, and everywhere in between.

With love,

P.S. If you were us: White Sox game for two in Chicago, or roll the dice on somewhere we've never been?

Hello, Reader! Have you ever been on vacation, sitting at the airport waiting to go home, and thought: What if we just missed our flight? What if we had to stay another night? What if we got one more day here? Maybe you've even joked about it as you were reluctantly leaving somewhere you really loved. Well... Thinking and joking about it is one thing, but how we respond if it ACTUALLY happens is another. Sitting on the plane, ready to depart St. Martin after a week of exploring at his own pace,...

Jupiter Flights Balloon Festival at Conner Prairie | Indiana

Hello, Reader! Friday night, I was at work. I spent the evening in the NICU, doing what I love; supporting families through one of the most exciting, frightening, exhausting and vulnerable experiences of their lives. There is something pretty extraordinary about being invited into those moments. Even on the hard nights, I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. And then, less than 24 hours later, I was somewhere completely different. Just a few miles, but a world away. Saturday night found...

“My Maine Friend”

Hello, Reader! Have you ever had a day off where your brain refuses to actually rest? Where instead it hands you every want, need, and “someday” all at once, like it’s been saving them up? Today. This weekend. This trip. This life. All of it. All at once. That was me on my one day off between shifts this week. And somewhere in the middle of it all, I noticed something, and I bet you’ve felt it, too. Everyone I love is on a journey. Just… not the same one as me. We talk all about travel here,...
