So Many Doors

Hello, Reader!

Have you ever had a day off where your brain refuses to actually rest? Where instead it hands you every want, need, and “someday” all at once, like it’s been saving them up?

Today. This weekend. This trip. This life.

All of it. All at once.

That was me on my one day off between shifts this week. And somewhere in the middle of it all, I noticed something, and I bet you’ve felt it, too.

Everyone I love is on a journey. Just… not the same one as me.

We talk all about travel here, but really, we talk about exploring and experiencing the world around us. Sometimes that’s intentional. Sometimes it’s just life.

Here’s what I mean…

A new friend of mine moved to Indiana from Florida this year. Watching her figure out this place (what to do, where to go, even just the seasons) takes me right back to when Todd and I made a similar move seven years ago.

Different direction. Same wide-eyed let’s-figure-this-out energy.

That’s actually how our state parks challenge started: with a desire to get to know the space around us.

Meanwhile, an old friend (one of those Facebook-only friendships now, where you still feel connected even though you haven’t talked in years) is currently walking the Camino de Santiago with her husband.

That’s a life goal of mine. So right now, I’m living it vicariously through her photos. I’m a little jealous and a lot inspired. 💕

And another friend just moved away, from Indiana to Maine.

I’m headed up to see her new home in December, which means New England in winter, a friendship in a new setting, and another little corner of the world to discover.

And I think that’s what I was really noticing in all of this.

We’re all moving through life at different speeds and in different directions.

Some of us are discovering a new place. Some are chasing a dream we’ve carried for years. Some are stepping into an entirely new chapter.

And somehow, when the people we love are moving forward, it makes our own world feel bigger, too.

Maybe you have your own version of this list right now.

The trip you keep saving to a Pinterest board.

The place someone you love just came back from, raving about.

The friend who’s somewhere new that you haven’t had a chance to visit yet.

For me, it all collided on that one day off. And honestly?

Overwhelm.

Not a bad overwhelm. More like standing in a room where every path is interesting, but you can only walk through one door at a time.

Here’s what I keep coming back to, though.

I don’t think this feeling is bad. I think it means I’m surrounded by people who are going somewhere, literally or otherwise.

And I love that.

I don’t have a tidy answer for which door to walk through next. Maybe I don’t need one. Maybe I can just appreciate that there are so many doors to choose from.

Maybe the overwhelm isn’t really overwhelm at all.

Maybe it’s just love and longing wearing a busy disguise.

Where’s your overwhelm pointing you lately?

Hit reply and tell me about it. I love reading your stories. 💕

Until next time...

Inside the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Carmel, IN.

Hello, Reader! You know, some weekends you don't have to go far to get a taste of somewhere new. Just this past weekend, Todd and I found ourselves at a local GreekFest. We sampled chicken and pork souvlaki and Greek salad topped with gyro meat; then followed that up enjoying slices of baklava, bougatsa, and chocolate napoleon. You might say I had a sweet tooth that night! Greek salad topped with gyro meat We wandered through the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral afterward, taking in...

Tour The Garden at Newfields in Indianapolis.

Hello, Reader. There's a garden in Indianapolis that's been growing for more than 100 years. It started in 1907 as a private, 26-acre estate. Today it's a 52-acre public garden and cultural destination, threaded with winding paths, fountains, and (depending on when you visit) a completely different mood each time. I'm talking about Newfields. IMA Galleries On the same grounds is the Indianapolis Museum of Art. I've wandered the gallery many times, and caught The Lume when it was here (I...

A beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean.

Hello, Reader. Fall is right around the corner and while we have our sights set on Europe, there are some great peak- and off-season destinations right here in the U.S. Last fall, we spent a week in South Carolina. The days were warm, the evenings were comfortable, and Myrtle Beach was quiet. If off-season travel pulls at your heart (and budget), this is a great option. We wrote a whole blog post about it, featuring 16 Fun Things to do in Myrtle Beach, ranging from golfing to hiking to the...
