🌊 What the ocean teaches us about life & belonging

Sunday was World Ocean Day. As I was thinking about all the places we've been - on or near the ocean - I felt a sense of peace flow through me.

This year's theme is "Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us," shining a spotlight on that vast body of water that "inspires, connects and nurtures" us.

The presence of AI has been growing in recent months and, I admit, while I haven't embraced it, I have explored it a bit. So yesterday I asked ChatGPT, "How does the ocean inspire, connect and nurture us?" The answer was surprisingly profound. In part, it read:

🌊 Inspires

  • Resilience & Adaptation: From tidepools to tsunamis, the ocean’s capacity for change and renewal teaches us about strength, survival, and the power of flow.

🌊 Connects

  • People & Cultures: For centuries, the ocean has been a literal and symbolic bridge between nations. Trade routes, migrations, and cultural exchanges have all traveled across its waters, weaving humanity together.

🌊 Nurtures

  • Heals: Being near water—what’s called “blue space”—has been scientifically shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and promote emotional well-being.

In these times when change is abundant, belonging is uncertain and emotional wellness is sometimes hard to come by, let's turn to the ocean and learn from it's example.

🍽️ Wandering with a Fork in Hand Ciao from Malta, Reader! We just wrapped up an unforgettable 3-week, 3-country adventure — Uganda, Italy and Malta — and while the views, people and places were amazing… I’ll admit, I had one big worry before leaving:What am I going to eat?
