🍂 Fall Colors & Haunted Tales: Your Perfect Autumn Escape

🍁 Fall Foliage & Spooky Stories Await

It may still feel like summer in the Midwest (and whew, those hot afternoons prove it!), but my early morning walks after work are starting out a little cooler. Plus, it's the start of football season. You know what that means…

Fall is just around the corner!

And with it comes so many of my favorite things: colorful leaves, cozy sweaters and maybe even a few goosebumps from a good ghost story.

Dreaming in Color: Vermont in the Fall
Fall in the Northeast has been calling to me for years — and Vermont in its peak foliage season is high on my bucket list. Picture this:

  • Brownsville – sweeping views of Mount Ascutney, Windsor County’s tallest peak.
  • Plymouth – sample local goodness at Plymouth Cheese (one of the stops along the Vermont Cheese Trail) or visit the historic Calvin Coolidge Homestead.
  • Woodstock – known for its quintessential covered bridges, charming downtown streets and galleries that invite you to linger.

Sounds like a postcard you can walk right into, doesn’t it? This tour lets you do just that.

For the Brave: Salem in October
If you prefer your fall travels with a little shiver down your spine, Salem, Massachusetts, is pure magic in October. We visited in summer and the ghostly charm was already there — I can only imagine it in the glow of autumn.

Options for thrill-seekers and history buffs alike:

Pro tip: October is peak season here, so book hotels or VRBOs early.

Beyond Salem: Day Trip Gold

  • Salem, NH (1 hour): Explore America’s Stonehenge — mysterious ancient ruins, archeology digs and, of course, haunted tours.
  • Kennebunkport, ME (90 mins): Coastal charm, beaches, lighthouses, lobster rolls, and maybe a catamaran ride along the rugged Maine shoreline.
